Today's entry on the Pyramyd Airsoft Blog features a take-down tutorial that I'm including as part of my in-depth A&K M60VN Review.

Check out the A&K M60VN Takedown Tutorial after the jump...

Click on any image for a high res shot in a new tab or window.

Flip that lever to lift the feed tray up and expose the top portion of the M60VN's gearbox.

This thing pops out.  I appears to be an elaborate device used to brace the gearbox while seated inside the M60VN's receiver.

Using a 2.0mm Allen/Hex Wrench, remove this bolt, on the same side of the receiver as that big, flat-head bolt I had you remove earlier.

In this photo, you see six bolts or screws, whatever you want to call them.  You only need to remove the two bolts with the spurred washers.

Once these bolts are removed, the A&K M60VN's gearbox is ready to be extracted from the outer body shell.  DO NOT JUST ATTEMPT TO LIFT THE GEARBOX UP AND OUT.  You could damage various internal parts, namely the three-pronged plug which bridges the gearbox wire connection to the MOSFET up in the front part of this Airsoft machine gun.

The PROPER TECHNIQUE is to slide the gearbox ("GB") back, so that the Air Nozzle is visibly disconnected from the Hop-Up Assembly, THEN lift the gearbox out of the A&K metal body.

Once my Airsoft gearbox been removed from the metal receiver, I could get a glance at some of the A&K M60VN internals, including what I believe to be the culprit in my electrical cut-off issue, as I described in my A&K M60VN Modified Hop-Up Performance Test Video.

One of the features I love about Airsoft machine guns is the quick-change spring feature on the gearboxes.  The A&K M60VN is no different.  That thing sticking out of the top of the gearbox is the Spring-Release Lever.  However, it's not as easy as just simply pulling that lever back, although it is possible.  It's much easier if you push in that aluminum cylinder with the hex screw in the center of it just a bit (this is the AEG's actual spring guide you see when looking at the back of the gearbox), with your other hand's finder on the Spring-Release Lever up top, so that you can feel when the tension on the lever is reduced enough to easily pull the lever back and release the AEG spring guide and AEG spring itself.  It's best if you continue holding the Spring-Release Lever back until you've fully removed not only the spring guide, but the AEG spring as well.  Otherwise, the lever will catch and make the spring's removal not-so-quick.  Know what I mean?

Once you remove the spring, then remove all, yes, ALL of the black hex screws that hold the two halves of the gearbox together.

Once you do that, you're almost ready to open up the M60VN's gearbox.  But not quite there yet.

See that wire connected to the A&K M60VN's short-type AEG motor?  Yea, pull that off prior to opening the gearbox.

The A&K M60VN's wire harness, trigger lever switch and three-pronged plug, which feeds electrical current out to the guns on-board MOSFET.  This MOSFET will allow you to control the Rate of Fire (ROF) within certain parameters (Between roughly 8 FPS and 17 FPS with an 11.1V Li-Po Battery)

Can't tell at first glance whether the second tooth has been mildly eaten up by the gears or if someone filed it down at the factory.  Will clean up the grease in a minute for a closer look.

Like I mentioned earlier, this gun features a Short-Type motor, so if you've got your own A&K M60VN and wish to upgrade the motor, now you know what type you'll need to get.  You're very welcome.

Here's a fun one.  Proprietary super extra mega uber long AEG air nozzle.  Good luck finding an after-market upgrade for that part.  Hardy har har.

After cleaning up the piston a bit and having a closer look, it appears the piston's second tooth was made to be a bit shorter.  A nice touch.  A better one would have been to completely remove that beeyotch, just to be safe, but I give A&K an "A" for "Effort."

Grease marks or wear & tear on the piston rails from the gearbox?  Probably grease marks.  Sorry.  No conspiracy here.  But there are so many!

Ah yessssss.  The trigger's electrical lever switch.  A nasty creature with a reputation to prove it.  Well regarded by some of my favorite Airsoft electrical experts as a real "Horse's Arse."  My guess is that it doesn't like my high-C-rated 11.1V Lithium Polymer battery.  Well.  Sorry, hombre.  But that's how I roll and if you can't keep up, then you're gonna have some real problems on your circuitry.

Anyway, so that's my A&K M60VN Takedown Tutorial for you.

Next up, troubleshooting that cut-off issue.  I'm going to buy a new switch and try a lower voltage Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) battery, or maybe the same voltage (11.1V Li-Po), just with a lower discharge rate (The C-Rating).  I don't know yet, because, GET THIS, I have to do some research on whether that even makes a difference.  That's right.  I freely admit I don't know everything.  We all have our weaknesses, and mine is not knowing everything.
