If you caught the last installment of my A&K M60VN Review, you no doubt saw the underwhelming footage of this general purpose machine gun's performance at 30 yards.  As I stated in that blog entry, I had a sneaking suspicion that there was an internal issue with the hop-up.  Turns out, I was right.  Somebody at the A&K machine shop didn't quite have their settings dialed in on the CNC machine.  I think my photos pretty much explain what happened.  See below.

First, to get to the hop-up, you must remove the outer barrel on the gun using the barrel release lever seen just above the hand guard.

Today's entry on the Pyramyd Airsoft Blog features the A&K M60VN on camera. The video is just a super quick and dirty performance test on the range to see what we've got to work with right from the get-go. It's important to note that this is Airsoft and while there are a few companies who are actually starting to give a crap about quality control (*cough* Elite Force *cough*), it's still fairly common to pull a new Airsoft gun out of the box and not have it performing to its full potential. What I've learned in my experiences in having the opportunity to work with a number of different guns is that just because something isn't cooperating as well as you'd like intitially, doesn't necessarily mean that the issue cannot be resolved relatively easily with a little fine-tuning of your own, assuming you know what you're doing inside these guns. With that in mind, please check out the initial performance test of the A&K M60VN after the jump...

While the M60VN hardly needs an introduction, we may have some new people joining us for the first time. This particular Airsoft light machine gun is manufactured by A&K and is a replica of the early M60 machine gun design, which is a belt-fed support weapon utilizing 7.62x51mm NATO rounds made world-famous by none other than the United States military. The A&K Airsoft LMG used the designation "VN" which probably stands for Vietnam and likely represents a reference to the war in which this variation of the M60 is most well-known for.  I could be way off here, but I don't think it's unreasonable to suggest.  Have I done a lot any Google searching to see if anyone else has clarified this matter with facts, one way or the other?  That'd be a "heck no."

Anyway, The A&K M60VN is certainly no chump.  It's a full metal Airsoft light machine gun, though "light" has nothing to do with the weight of the gun.  It's not as heavy as the Echo1 M240 Bravo, which clocks in just under 20 lbs, fully loaded up with roughly 4,000 BBs, but it's definitely not going to be a super high-speed Magpul'd-out M4 CQB rifle either.  Perhaps if you play your cards right, I'll throw this beast on my baby Airsoft gun scale and see what she officially tips the scales at.

Overall, I'd say this item is a must-have for any serious Airsoft player with a desire to collect iconic and eye-catching Airsoft guns for their Airsoft arsenal.  However, like the real M60, the Airsoft M60VN is not without its design flaws.  Nothing that would prohibit me from recommending this guns to anyone, but flaws nonetheless.  All this, and more, will be clarified after the jump...

There is A&K M60VN Gun PRON at the end of this Health and Safety Series for Airsoft Champions blog as a reward for sticking it out through the boring, yet very important info I'm about to share with you.

PROTEIN sources.

Just like the pigs in the book, Animal Farm, some protein sources are more equal than other protein sources.

Why am I even talking about protein on an Airsoft blog?

Great question.  Because true Airsoft Champions are the ones who get out to the field and PLAY Airsoft.  You won't see too many people who are truly good at Airsoft trolling retail & manufacturer social media channels in their free time.

Protein repairs and builds additional muscle.  Having the strength to shoulder-fire the 20-pound Echo1 M240 Bravo Airsoft Machine Gun, for example, comes in REAL handy if you want to look badass out on the field.   Incorporating good quality protein will help you build the muscles you need to do that.

Speaking of badasses with Echo1 M240 Bravos, would you mind hitting the "like" button on the picture at this Facebook link?

I will raffle off the Echo1 ER-16 if I win the contest.  I know it sounds silly, but I just want the bragging rights.  What can I say?  I have vanity issues.  As an Airsoft Blogger, I am not usually in shortage of guns, so it would be kind of selfish of me to keep the gun anyway.

Anyway, back to the protein stuff & M60VN Gun Pron after the jump...

In this instance, I used a Tokyo Marui Mk23 SOCOM Gas Magazine, but the concept and principles are the same for other magazines like the WE Hi-Capa Mags, M9 Beretta Mags, Sig Sauer P226 Mags, etc.  The process is slightly different to remove the base plate, but not to treat the seal with PTFE (Teflon).

Air Venturi Small Aluminum Case
Tom Harris for the Pyramyd Airsoft Blog

Anyone who knows me in the local Airsoft scene knows that I always bring a metric ton of Airsoft Gear with me to games because I hate needing something at a game that I didn't end up bringing with me.  The importance of being able to store and transport my gear safely is paramount to me, not to mention, in general, I just LOVE nice gun boxes & cases as well as tactical gear bags, which is why I dig this little hard case from Air Venturi.  It's an extremely versatile little box that does a great job at keeping safe whatever I put in it.  For your convenience, I've copied & pasted the specs on this box from Pyramyd Air.
  • Airline-Approved
  • 11.88"Lx4.88"Wx9.5"H
  • 3.85 lbs.
  • 2 combination locks
  • Sturdy handle
  • Reinforced corners
  • Egg-crate foam interior

So for today's entry here on the Pyramyd Airsoft Blog, I thought I'd illustrate the extreme versatility of this case in its ability to keep a variety of stuff inside with some photos. You can either just scroll down the page here and view them or, if you click on one of them, they'll open up into a high-resolution (larger image) Lightbox photo gallery that you can cycle through as well. You'll miss out on my super funny comments though. Your call, cowboy.

1) The Air Venturi case handles my Gen2+ Night Vision System (NVS) and Surefire G2 Light with extreme care.

Elite Force M4A1 Carbine Competition Series Airsoft AEG
Tom Harris for the Pyramyd Airsoft Blog
Here's a little review of the Elite Force M4A1 Carbine Competition Series AEG.  Technically, I'd consider it more of a performance test.  After I got the right BBs into the equation, this thing really started to cooperate.  I started out using .25g BBs, but they were all over the place, so I switched to a .30g just to see what the gun would do.  Low and behold, immediate improvement in flight path.  I could now zero in my optic and begin the test.

Today is 11-11-11 which marks the day 92 years ago that President Woodrow Wilson declared this day as Armistice Day, which we now call Veterans Day.  It's a day to remember those that have served a tour of duty in combat and/or made a career out of serving in the United States Military.  It's important to stop for just a moment in our busy lives and consider the sacrifices others have made on behalf of American citizens so that we can be free in our pursuits of happiness.  Regardless of your political views, the fact of the matter is that if it weren't for our veterans, we wouldn't have the right to voice those views if they weren't in favor of our government along with many other luxuries that many Americans take for granted.  There were many different events around the nation honoring our veterans and the one that I was able to witness was a flyover by the United States Air Force in a Boeing C-17A Globemaster III military-transport aircraft.  The flyover took place in Redlands, CA and was a scheduled event in honor of Veterans Day 2011.

Airsoft Face Masks - Airsoft Health & Safety

Airsoft Health and Safety - Airsoft Eye Protection
Source: sporting-goods-online.com

So remember when you were first learning to ride a bike or rollerblade and your parents made you wear that really annoying and super extra geeky protective gear like the white hardened stryofoam helmet or wrist guards & such?  Or was that only me? Well, anyway, just go with me on this.

When it comes to Airsoft, there are certain must-have pieces of equipment.  Obviously, you need an Airsoft gun or two, a battery or green gas to power the gun, BBs to shoot and last but certainly not least, Eye protection.  Just like wearing a helmet on a bike, you gotta wear eye protection, at a minimum.  So rather than wearing some nerdy looking face mask that just gets you made fun of by all your Airsoft buddies at the field, the people at Save Phace decided to do you a favor and combine the benefits of full face protection with some badass designs so that you don't have to feel embarrassed about how you look in your Airsoft protective gear out on the field.

Check out a ton of Save Phace Airsoft Mask Designs after the jump...

If I win Echo1's Team BLACKSHEEP ER-16 Photo Contest, I will raffle off the Echo1 USA ER-16 AEG to one of the people who has liked my photo on the official contest page.  If I win, I will then announce the winner of the prize that I just won either here on the Pyramyd Airsoft Blog and/or on the new Pyramyd Airsoft Facebook Page.  I'm sure some of you might want to know what the point is of me winning the contest if I'm just going to give the prize away as soon as I win it.  Simple.  Bragging rights.  AEGs will come and go.  But bragging rights will live forever.  Like the time I ate three (yes, THREE) Chipotle burritos in under 45 minutes.  There were many witnesses.

Liking my photo anywhere else other than on Team BLACKSHEEP's official gallery will NOT count towards your entry.

Just (1) follow the link (either the picture above, or the link below) to the official picture entry on Echo1's Team BLACKSHEEP page, (2) hit the like button, then (3) leave.

Don't even look at the other photos.  To be completely honest, while mine may not be that great either, some of the other entries are pretty bad.

This plan won't work if you like my photo, but then you go through the rest of the galley and like everyone else's.

Can't we be monogamous just this once?

Pyramyd Airsoft Blog
Wow.  According to the Military Times blog, Gear Scout, Chris Costa is leaving Magpul Dynamics, effective as of year-end 2011/early 2012-ish.  In case you're just tuning into the world, Magpul Dynamics is the tactical training powerhouse in which Costa played a key role developing a cult-like following in both the real steel and Airsoft realms due, in part, to a series of instructional training DVDs filmed during their live-fire shooting courses.  Perhaps most notably, "The Art of the Tactical Carbine" Parts I & II, which feature The Beard along with former-Magpul Dynamics CEO, Travis Haley, instructing students on the most effective ways to dispatch a threat using very expensive tricked-out M4 carbine rifles.

Apparently, Costa and his beard plan to start their own training school, Costa Ludus, which should allow him a bit more flexibility in his tactical enlightenment schedule to spend more time with his family.  Also according the Gear Scout report, Costa appears to be leaving on good terms with Magpul, which is always something I hope for.  I'm not a fan of drama.

As a little "knowledge treat" for you, the term "Ludus," according to the all-knowing Wikipedia, stems from Ancient Rome, with several meanings.  One of which refers to a training school for gladiators and the other?  Erotic role-playing.  I couldn't make that up if I tried.  My guess is Costa was going for the former meaning, rather than the latter.  However, I know that he can be quite the character at times, so perhaps I might be wrong. Either way, I think I can speak for many of the Magpul maniacs out there when I say that we wish him well on his new endeavors.

Special thanks to Stickman for the use of his badass imagery.  Check out more of his handywork with a Canon DSLR on Facebook.  When you're done oggling his guns & gear galleries, check out our new Pyramyd Airsoft Facebook Page and feel free to say nice things to us or about us to your friends.
