Today, I thought I'd take you into the world of gear whores for a minute and show you how to quickly install a set of ARC helmet rail adapters on your COMTAC headset.

Just to give you a little background on why this is a useful thing to do, aside from that fact that these adapters will make you look more like a high-speed operator, I feel compelled to mention that I have a fairly large skull.

Consequently, not all helmets fit me the same way and sometimes, as in the case of my Air Frame helmet here (it's a knock-off, I ain't gonna lie), the darn thing is just too small when you factor in that I always wear a shemagh on my head as a sweatband.  It's pretty much a must because I get so hot and sweaty when I play that my goggles go beyond fogged and just get covered in liquid sweat, reducing my visibility to pretty much zero.

SOOOO, long story short, I don't have any room inside the helmet for the somewhat bulky COMTAC headset.  Installing the helmet rail adapters for my COMTACs alleviates that issue quite well.

To get started, you have to take apart your COMTAC headset.  Doing so can be somewhat difficult without breaking the earpiece clips unless you know the trick.

What is that trick, you say?

If one were to examine the pegs on the sides of each earpiece, one would notice that the pegs are less circular and more ovular, meaning that depending on which angle you look at the peg, one side is wider than the other.

The image to the right shows the wider side.  The image directly underneath shows the thinner side.

Please excuse the terrible image quality.  I did not have my DSLR handy and was crunched for time.

With that being established, the trick to detaching the original headset piece and installing the ARC rail adapter clips, is to clip them on at a 90-degree angle with the earpiece.  The opening on the clips is quite small and the polymer/plastic material used is very inflexible, so snapping them using the thinner side of the pegs will yield you much better results.  See the image below.

So there you have it.  ARC rail adapters installed successfully.  I forgot to snap a photo, but I left the thin metal headband intact to use as a conduit for the wiring that has to pass through the helmet from one earpiece to the other.  This is something you'll have to play around with to see whether it will work with your setup or if you'll have to completely remove the headband or not.  I secured it using some Velcro pieces so that it can be removed and used in another helmet if need be.
