How to Easily Win 50 Bucks from Pyramyd Air

Some of my readers with an insatiable appetite for my Pyramyd Airsoft Blog ramblings will quite possibly have noticed that for the past several months, I have included the following image at the conclusion of each post:

Some of you might be a bit skeptical to even bother to click on the image and get the details on just how exactly you can win 50 bucks from Pyramyd Air.   I can't blame you.  Seems like a lot of the contests these days require too much effort.  Well, in my opinion, this one isn't too bad.

All you have to do is upload a cool photo of yourself with an Airsoft gun to the Pyramyd Airsoft Facebook page wall.

The biggest obstacle to overcome is simply submitting a photo that complies with our rules.  You might not like them, but rules is rules for a good reason (usually).  So I thought I might map out just exactly what those rules were and provide, wherever possible, an illustration of either what to do, or not to do in each case.

Check out our short list of rules after the jump...

There comes a point in an Airsofter's life where selecting just any Airsoft gun will no longer do. Growing from playing in backyard skirmishes to real steel training or attending 2-Day MilSim Ops at exclusive Areas of Operation (AOs) requires an evolution in weapon selection.  In this case, the more realistic, the better.  Luckily, Airsoft has grown by leaps & bounds in a very short amount of time and there are a number of very high quality options out there, suitable for reliable performance in a MilSim or training environment.

Today, I'm going to talk dirty a lil bit 'bout the new RedStar AMD-65 AK from Echo1 USA. But first, a few disclaimers.

Disclaimer A) Yes, I know that I already used these photos in a prior blog where I was showing off the new MadBull PBS Mock Suppressors I got. But I was actually having a heck of a time getting the stock flash hider back on the rifle and didn't see the point in re-shooting AND editing the same images when I already had perfectly good shots already done and done.

Disclaimer B) I realize that if this were a real firearm, I'd have the wrong suppressor on there for that particular caliber rifle. Well guess what? This is not a real firearm. This is an Airsoft rifle and I thought it looked cool so go ahead and "shut your mouth when you're talking to me!" (name the movie)

Disclaimer C) I realize that for a proper review, illustrating the way the gun actually looks when you pull it from the box would require me to put the flash hider back on this rifle. BUT, since I opted not to reshoot these pics as noted in Disclaimer A), I didn't have any shots of the rifle in this configuration. Secondly, I was having a heck of a time getting the flash hider to thread properly on the end of the rifle and got impatient, so I said, "Dash it all!" and decided to forego any pictures with the flash hider properly installed.

Alright. That's all the disclaimers I've got for now. The actual review of the Echo1 AMD-65 AK begins after the jump...

So a week or two ago, I decided to pick a fight with a giant.  Just to see what would happen.  Well, I may have gotten a bit more than I bargained for.  HA!  I got trolled pretty hard on the Pyramyd Airsoft YouTube Channel by a bunch of CrazyNCman's loyal fans.  Frank & I were both pretty surprised at just how stupid some of these people could be to not realize this whole thing was a joke.  So anyway, I made this little video as a response to all that mess.  I appreciate those of you that have supported me thus far.  You're the reason I'm still here.  Hopefully, you enjoy this video.  Here are some links to some of the things shown in the video:

SS Airsoft Action Video & Team Interview

As it turns out, I left my camera in Hotlanta over the weekend, so I don't have all my content available to post.  BUT, luckily, Frank was "crazy" enough to post a few vids already and so I'll share those with you here & now.

In this first video, CrazyNCman takes the Elite Force 4CRS for a spin on the newly expanded indoor field there at SS Airsoft.  You'll notice that in addition to the insane rate of fire this rifle has, he's got a tracer unit affixed and is shooting Elite Force tracer BBs.  Pretty sweet.

The next video, CrazyNCman interviews some cool dudes collectively known as Team G.E.A.R.S., who play there at SS Airsoft often.  I got to meet a few of their members while I was there and found them to be really down to earth guys who love Airsoft.  My kind of a people.  Check 'em out on Facebook & tell 'em Pyramyd Air sent you.

In case you haven't heard, or you chose to ignore my title, Ares is going to make a sweet new sniper rifle.  But before we get to that, let us gaze upon the glory that is the new SOCOM Gear Hitman M9.
Pardon my horrific failure to focus the subject.  I would love to blame Simon from MadBull who was holding the gun at the time, but if I was a good enough photog, that wouldn't have mattered.  Oh well.
The slide reads, "no women, no kids."
The lower frame reads, "MADE IN HELL BY SOCOMGEAR.  READ MANUAL BEFORE USE."
Simon had a few other things to show me.  Licensed Spikes Tactical goodies among them, along with Lancer & Troy magazines, which were pretty unique and pretty cool.

Here is where I draw the line.  You wanna see that beautiful new Ares MSR?
You gotta click that link, dawg.  It awaits you after the jump.

Yesterday, I was able to meet James Chan of WE Airsoft, who informed me that later in the day, they'd be releasing a very special new gun, which, he revealed, would be an Airsoft gas blowback version of the Smith & Wesson M&P 9mm handgun. Me thinks this will probably be a pretty popular pistola.

I realize that the image above has almost nothing to do with the magazines themselves, as they are barely visible in the shot, but I thought it was a lot more attention grabbing than just a shot of a bunch of Airsoft magazines. So that's what I went with. But to satisfy both parties, here's one of just the Elite Force Universal Mid Cap Mags all by themselves.

When it comes to using Airsoft as a training tool for real steel weapons manipulation and operation, there are a number of advantages.  However, there are also a few limitations that prevent Airsoft guns from being the perfect training tool.  One of those limitation is the fragility and sensitivity of gas magazines.  They are fragile when it comes to dropping them on the ground from a standing height when you eject them from the gun to load a new mag.  They are sensitive to the dirt they fall in after they've landed on the ground.  Reuse a dirty gas mag in your gun at your own peril.  Needless to say, letting your gas mags hit the ground to reload is less than optimal.

There are several solutions to this for Airsoft purposes.  One could argue that performing a "tactical reload" would be the way to go.  As I was taught by a retired Special Forces operator, this is where you grab a fresh mag from your vest with your off-hand first and then, with that same hand, grab the mag in the gun as you hit the mag release button.  Insert the fresh mag while you have both mags in hand and then once inserted completely, place your spent mag in your dump pouch.

That's cool.  Especially since it is more of the textbook way of doing it.  Now, I'm definitely NOT saying I know better than a real deal, Special Forces operator, however, let me throw an idea at you from a different angle.  Enter the small dump pouch from 5.11 Tactical.  As you can see in the picture below, I've added it to the front of my battle belt, on my right side so that I can easily drop the empty mag inside of it without needing to use my "off hand."
While I'm dropping the magazine in the dump pouch with my right hand, I'm reaching for a new mag on my vest with my left hand (If you're an openly left-handed shooter, then you'll want to swap this around).  *I know that my pistol mag pouches are empty.  I only had one mag handy for this demonstration.  So just imagine one is there*
I'm sure there are those out there that would gasp in horror at the thought of having TWO dump pouches on their kit *Oh, the sacrilege!  But I've found it to be very handy, a more natural sequence of movements for me, and a bit faster than performing a tactical reload.  Sure, if I practiced for awhile, I'm sure I could get pretty quick with my tactical reloads.  But I don't want to practice that method when I've already got a good system going.  If it ain't broke, don't fix it.  If it doesn't fit, you must acquit, too.  I suppose you could just use one large dump pouch for your rifle and pistol mags, but I like to keep mine separate.  Separate but equal.
I've found that if you've got a bunch of rifle mags already in the big pouch, and then you start dumping pistol mags in there (this has happened during long firefights with a long of bad guys to shoot), the pouch starts to get overfilled and a bit too heavy for my tastes.  Having that second, mini pouch on there takes up minimal real estate on the belt (only one MOLLE webbing slot) and helps to mitigate some of those issues I just mentioned.
So that's what I've got for you.  You don't have to use this method.  If you have another method that you like better, feel free to share it here in the comments.

Accessorizing the KWA LM4 Gas Blowback Rifle

Accessorizing the KWA LM4 PTR (Gas Blowback Rifle)
"Live Free or Die"
Check out a bunch of KWA LM4 photos after the jump...

For anyone who's been following me here on the Pyramyd Airsoft Blog over the last several weeks, you've no doubt seen all the Airsoft action footage I've uploaded to the Pyramyd Airsoft YouTube Channel where either myself or my good friend, Trent F. Warren, were slaying tangos with the KWA M4 CQR MOD2 AEG.  This rifle is a great option for anyone who wants the high performance that KWA guns are known for, without having to go over budget to get one.

The CQR MOD2 has been a great rifle, but I did notice that the FPS seemed a bit low for what it was rated for by the manufacturer.  FPS was a little more inconsistent that what I'd like to see in an AEG, so I decided to tear this thing down a bit and see about sealing up the hop-up assembly to see if that would help (it usually does).

To do a proper evaluation of the results of your attempts to improve performance, it is essential to perform an accuracy and/or chrono test, whichever is applicable, prior to beginning your tuning procedures.  Luckily, I remembered to do this before I got started, which isn't always the case.

Here are the chrono results before any improvements or upgrades were performed on the CQR, using Elite Force .20g BBs:
317
310
332
306
287
298
301
311
315
304
=/- average (standard deviation): 11.5 fps
Spread: 45 fps
Average FPS: 308.1

So, as you can see, it's a bit more inconsistent than I'd like.

Today we tackle the H&K UMP SMG competition series AEG from Elite Force like a lion on a gazelle.
It's important to note that this will be one of two versions from Elite Force on the UMP.  This, as I've already stated, is the competition series, which is more of an entry level option, while the pro-line UMP is set for release sometime later this year.

Elite Force Airsoft & Red Jacket Firearms Form a New Partnership

Elite Force announced on their Facebook page that they've formed a partnership with Red Jacket Firearms, the company behind the popular TV Show, Sons of Guns.  While the announcement was brief and relatively general in terms of what to expect, they did say that these products won't be out until next year (2013).

I placed a call into my boys at Elite Force, but they were like two vaults.  Andy Green just responded to my requests for more details by simply saying, "Come at me, bro."  This infuriated me and so I just hung up on him.

I do, however, have unconfirmed hunches that we might expect to see some of the most popular Red Jacket custom builds produced in Airsoft form.

Check out my predictions on what we might see from this partnership after the jump...

To be honest, that title is rather tricky, and not just because I'm using the word "best" when only comparing two objects, rather than three or more. Know what I'm sayin'? Where my grammar trolls at?

Before I get into the RIS vs. RAS comparison, let me first specify the components of the two acronyms.

RIS = Rail Interface System
RAS = Rail Adapter System

There are actually quite a few variations of those two out there but after doing a bit of mild research on several major firearms manufacturer sites (e.g. Daniel Defense, Knight's Arm Co, etc), as well as a few other gun-related informational sites, I've determined that those are probably two of the more correct meanings. However, since there doesn't seem to be a standard definition that covers multiple manufactured rails, I'm not sure if there's a wrong answer either.

So what the heck is the difference between RIS and RAS then?

Find out after the jump...

Solving the Echo1 M240 Bravo Trigger Switch Contact Issue

As some of you Echo1 M240 Bravo owners may already know, there is a bit of a design flaw with the position of the trigger switch inside the gun.

The wires that connect to the switch's contact plates stick out a bit too in the back, making it difficult to install the stock after inserting a battery or putting the gun away for storage or transportation in a case.

When installing the stock onto the back of the gun's receiver, the bottom portion of the stock would catch on the wires attached to the thin, metal contact plates of the trigger switch, causing the plates to bend back & forth, which weakens the metal each time it is bent.  Eventually, I broke one of the plates off and had to spring for a whole new trigger switch.
So I installed the new trigger switch, but the problem was not resolved, so I knew it was only a matter of time before I would be replacing it again if I didn't figure something out.
First, I thought about bending the wire terminals into more of a 90-degree angle to try and get them out of the way, but the jackets used by the manufacturer were a bit too thick to allow them to bend completely out of the way and I wasn't sure that replacing them with smaller shrink tubing was going to do a whole lot more good either.
So I took a more drastic route that worked marvelously.
I cut that SOB.  I cut it hard...with a Dremel.

I noticed, upon initial examination of the stock that there was quite a bit of unnecessary material at the exact point where the stock was snagging on the wire terminals.  I, therefore, removed most of the material, leaving enough to keep the stock's spring-loaded latch in place.  When I tried installing the stock with the excess material removed, it went on like butter, as they say.  Threat neutralized.

I will add that the material I removed is part of a metal adapter on the stock, so while I suppose you could use a hand file set if you didn't have a rotary tool like a Dremel, it will likely take you quite a bit longer to complete this task.  Fair warning.

Today, I'm going to revisit the world of WE Airsoft guns.  I have some particularly newsworthy items, in my opinion.  James Chan of WE, uploaded a video to their YouTube channel announcing the development of their very interesting new split gearbox design for their new line of AEGs.  Additionally, he also showcased a VERY attractive new Raptor rail system design, which reminds me quite a bit of the Remington Bushmaster ACR rail.  I happen to love that design, so naturally, I was pretty excited to see one show up on the radar for Airsoft.  Unless I missed it in the video, nothing shown in the video is available for sale as of the time this blog was written.

http://youtu.be/inbBQ_5MRts

I will be honest that I haven't been paying much attention to WE over the past several months because there has been so much other exciting stuff going on in the Airsoft world that I happened to have missed a rather monumental update from them.  So I will admit that this news is not really news anymore, since the video was uploaded back in April of this year.  Apparently, they're in development on a gas blowback (GBB) version of the Magpul AK, which Beta Project produced on the AEG side.  If you're wondering which of all the guns available on the market, I've been most interested in adding to my personal collection, the Magpul AK (AEG or GBB) is right up there at the top.  So check out this quick video as well, to wet your appetites.

Wassup? During my time last weekend tearing it up at SC Viper, I did some serious work with the A&K M60VN machine gun.  But it wasn't all fun & games.  I had trouble throughout the day with my battery pack, which is stored inside the box mag, because it kept toggling the switch on the side of the box mag either into the "Off" position or the "Continuous" feed position, which caused the magazine to continually try and feed BBs into the gun, even though the gun wasn't firing.

If you've had the privilege of owning a PolarStar Fusion Engine, you will undoubtedly be aware that the trigger response is lightening quick and distance required for the actual trigger to travel in order to fire the weapon is very small. However, since they use the standard AEG triggers, which are made with a rather long trigger pull, there is a lot of unneeded travel time before the trigger actually hits the button inside the engine which begins the firing process.

Here on the Pyramyd Airsoft Blog, I will cover the good, the bad and the hideously ugly of these three rifles.  I will freely admit that these are not the only gas blowback M4 rifles out on the market, but are the only ones I had access to.  In an ideal world, I would have liked to include the KJW/Tanio Koba M4 GBBR, the Inokatsu M4 GBBR & maybe the Bomber M4 GBBR as well. Maybe someday.  But for now, these three rifles will have to do.

So let's cut the crap, shall we?

I'm sure my buddies over at Elite Force are going to cringe when they read this, but let's face it: not everyone out there is going to send their gun in under warranty to get it fixed, should an issue arise. Some people just prefer to do the work themselves for whatever reason. So here's a blog for those of us who like to void our Airsoft warranties. No seriously, I'm pretty sure if you take your Elite Force M4A1 Carbine apart, as I am about to show you, you can kiss that sweet Umarex 1-year warranty goodbye. Just a fair warning before you do anything you might regret later.
