The Airsoft "Bang Bang" or "Safety Kill" Health & Safety Series for Airsoft Champions

Today's post on the Pyramyd Airsoft Blog is centered around the "Bang Bang" rule. This has different names at different fields. Other known associates include, but are not limited to,"Safety Kill" or just saying "Surrender."

I like saying, or rather, yelling "Bang Bang" instead of "surrender" because I don't like giving my enemies a choice. They are dead and all I'm doing is giving them the courtesy of NOT installing a new and painful welt (or worse) on their skin.

Now, one might ask, why the hell would you perform a safety kill like that on someone when you could just shoot them?

Well, when it comes to the MilSim-quality guns out there which operate over and above 350 FPS with a .20g BB...

THERE IS SUCH A THING AS BEING TOO CLOSE TO ENGAGE A HUMAN TARGET.

The safety kill concept is especially useful at Airsoft CQB & MOUT fields where there are structures and areas which lend themselves to close quarter engagements. It's not as necessary with large, outdoor fields like my old hometown field, Hill559, which is one square-mile of raw private land. However, it can still be used in that environment, just not as often.

Anyway, back to being too close. Enter what is known as the "Minimum Engagement Distance" by many. The rules vary from field to field, but generally speaking, there is a minimum distance at which you can shoot at another player. If you get within that distance, lets say 10-25 feet which is fairly typical, you must either transition from your rifle to a field legal pistol or simply yell, "Bang Bang" to get the safety kill.

I know there are a lot of "tough guys" out there who like to play "prison rules," but the reality is that most of us are just out to have a good time. Some fields don't enforce this at all, while others try hard to crack down on dangerous situations like that.

The other thing you can do, if you're really concerned about this is to simply wear full face protection, unlike this guy:

This photo was taken at Lion Claws X: Evolution Real World or whatever it was called. My good friend and Airsoft action photographer, Dave Bakholdin happened to be in the right spot at the right time to snap a shot of this gentleman, who was engaged by someone else with a hot rifle from within the minimum engagement distance. I'm not knocking him for not wearing full face protection. I certainly don't like wearing the lower mask with my goggles, but technically, this could have been prevented by either wearing the full mask and/or the other idiot properly exercising a proper safety kill.

One final note I would add on this is that "it takes two tangos" to make this work. <---- See what I did there? Dumb, I know.

What I mean, is that it takes two players, each a tango to the other, for the "Bang Bang" concept to work. Again, it all comes down to honor & integrity (do you have it in you?). One person has to decide to say, "bang bang" or "surrender" instead of shooting the other in that split second he rolls up on him, while the unsuspecting victim has to accept the safety kill. I've seen plenty of idiots not take the kill and then get pissed when the other guy shoots them so close. Seriously? Don't be that guy. Just head back to respawn, take a deep breath and get back in the fight. If you have no respawns left, perhaps consider brushing up on your tactical skillz.

Custom Airsoft Gun Upgrades Quick Tip - Polishing AEG Gearbox Piston Rails

Good day to you, sir or madam, (but likely "sir"). I've got a quick custom Airsoft AEG upgrade tip for tuning your beloved rifle. Wanna know what it is? No. Well you're offensive. And rude. So double offensive. For those of you who do want to know, just keep reading.

I'll be honest. This is one of those custom AEG upgrades that just makes sense to me, although I am not sure if I could produce a reliable test to say for sure. But the whole concept is based on friction and how I don't feel it should have a place inside my gearbox, specifically, in this case, between my AEG's gearbox and the AEG Piston contained therein.

Friction on the piston can reduce, even if only ever-so-slightly, your rifle's velocity output, measured in feet-per-second (FPS). Friction can also create other issues, damages and mishaps inside the gearbox that make me angry. BTW, you wouldn't like me when I'm angry. Heck, I don't even like me when I'm angry. So in order to avoid that anger, I've gone ahead and taken an extra step in attempting to reduce this friction I speak of.

After watching that video, I will go on record saying that I'm in. I will need to take a look at what I can contribute, but I am good for some Airsoft goodies.

It definitely sucks that Giovanni has to move to a new place and make new friends, but I'm not TOO worried about it. He will be in ~~good~~ great company when he gets to Tennessee. My homies Phil & Jeff will be there to provide him with a warm Tennessee welcome. They belong to an Airsoft team called M7 - Multiple Applications Group.

SB 1315 - SB 798's Ugly Reincarnate

As some of you may have heard, SB 1315 has passed the Senate Public Safety Committee, just as SB 798 did, as I recall. No real surprise there. I believe it was the House of Representatives where we achieved victory last time and that's where it needs to happen once again.

FEBRUARY 23, 2012 An act to amend Section 53071.5 of the Government Code, relatingto imitation firearms.

LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL'S DIGEST SB 1315, as amended, De León.

Imitation firearms: regulation:County of Los Angeles.

Existing law provides that the Legislature occupies the wholefield of regulation of the manufacture, sale, or possession ofimitation firearms, as defined, and that those provisions shallpreempt and be exclusive of all regulations relating to themanufacture, sale, or possession of imitation firearms, includingregulations governing the manufacture, sale, or possession of BBdevices and air rifles, as specified. Existing law defines "imitationfirearm" ~~to include a "BB device" and defines a "BB device,"for specified purposes, to include any spot marker gun~~
as any BB device, toy gun, replica of a firearm, or other devicethat is so substantially similar in coloration and overallappearance to an existing firearm as to lead a reasonableperson to perceive that the device is a firearm.

This bill would provide an exception to those provisions byauthorizing the County of Los Angeles, or any city within the Countyof Los Angeles, to enact and enforce an ordinance or resolution ~~regulating the manufacture, sale, possession, or use of aspot marker gun that expels a projectile larger than 16mm~~
that is more restrictive than state law regulating themanufacture, sale, possession, or use of any BB device, toy gun,replica of a firearm, or other device that is so substantiallysimilar in coloration and overall appearance to an existing firearmas to lead a reasonable person to perceive that the device is afirearm and that expels a projectile that is no more than 16millimeters in diameter.

Vote: majority.

Appropriation: no.

Fiscal committee: no.

State-mandated local program: no.

THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:

SECTION 1. Section 53071.5 of the Government Code is amended toread: 53071.5. (a) By the enactment of this section, the Legislatureoccupies the whole field of regulation of the manufacture, sale, orpossession of imitation firearms, as defined in subdivision (a) ofSection 16700 of the Penal Code, and that subdivision shall preemptand be exclusive of all regulations relating to the manufacture,sale, or possession of imitation firearms, including regulationsgoverning the manufacture, sale, or possession of BB devices and airrifles described in Section 16250 of the Penal Code. (b) Notwithstanding subdivision (a), the County of Los Angeles,and any city within the County of Los Angeles, may enact and enforcean ordinance or resolution regulating the manufacture, sale,possession, or use of a spot marker gun that expels a projectilelarger than 16mm. that is more restrictive than statelaw regulating the manufacture, sale, possession, or useof any BB device, toy gun, replica of a firearm, or other device that meets both of the following requirements: (1) The device is so substantially similar in coloration andoverall appearance to an existing firearm as to lead a reasonableperson to perceive that the device is a firearm. (2) The device expels a projectile that is no more than 16millimeters in diameter.

It would seem that I predicted one of the amendments almost correctly. Rather than just dropping the number one, they just changed the wording to exclude all guns firing projectiles no larger than 16mm. That way the Paintballers can continue to thrive. That's cool. They played their cards better than we did and got better, more well-connected representatives. I'm all about working smarter, not harder, so I, unfortunately, find no fault in what they did. I would have done it, too, had I the same resources available to me. I realize I hit a nerve last time I mouthed off about paintball guns looking ridiculous and that notion still stands, Steve.

But do I hope that Paintball gets banned as well? Absolutely not. I DO hope that Senator De Leon would find something a little more constructive with his time than pursuing this and other frivolous bills. Are you telling me that our state has solved the education, unemployment, and overall budget crises (yes, plural for more than one crisis)?

Speaking of representatives, what's the deal with the Airsoft Safety Foundation. As I understand it, it takes a bunch of money to become a member of this non-profit organization, which is supposed to go towards funding some sort of lobbyist on behalf of the Airsoft industry. There are a ton of members, which means, in theory, that the Airsoft Safety Foundation now has a ton of money to help fund the countermeasures to this legislation. Aside from wondering what their audit report looks like, I wonder what the Airsoft Safety Foundation has been up to since the demise of SB 798. The only update I recall seeing from them since, was to announce that SB 1315 has passed the Senate Public Safety Committee hearing. Might I suggest taking a proactive, rather than reactive, approach to this one, guys? While I may be a bit critical at the wrong time here, what I'm really trying to say is that we all need to step it up again, not just rely upon the Airsoft Safety Foundation, especially since we have no real idea whether or not they're actually doing anything since there's no transparency, and in all reality, even if we win, we will need to maintain that higher level of safety consciousness and responsibility indefinitely. I knew that as soon as SB 798 blew over, we'd all go back to just chillin', and not worry pretty much at all what might be on the horizon from Senator De Leon. Sure enough, it was all quiet on the western front almost immediately afterwards and now De Leon is back, trying to weasel his way into our world so he can shut it down.

Bottom line is that we need to cut the crap and either upgrade our mindset to become much more safety conscious and much less complacent with our Airsoft guns, or we should find a new hobby because this one will becoming illegal in just a few short months. What's it gonna be, players?

Umarex H&K MP5 A5 Tac EBBR Review (OEM - Top Tech/G&G)

When I first set eyes on the Umarex H&K MP5 A5 Tac Electric Blowback Rifle (EBBR) in person a month or two ago, I realized a month or two ago that I've never really dealt with an MP5 on the Pyramyd Airsoft Blog here. This one was so visually and physically impressive, that I figured I would check it out, in case any of you wonderful readers out there were in the market for a high quality MP5.

So before I get too deep into the features of the H&K MP5 A5 Tac EBBR, I'd like to take a moment to talk about the actual manufacturer that Umarex partnered with on this one. Top Tech is a relatively little known brand, at least here in the states. It does not get as much time as I think it deserves in the spotlight as its more affordable counterpart, Guay Guay, or best known as G&G. Top Tech is G&G's high end line of airsoft guns and nothing short of impressive. I recall my first encounter with the Top Tech product line at Shot Show 2011. I was at the G&G booth and picked up one of the rifles they had on their wall, thinking it was just a standard G&G M4, but this one had significantly more weight to it, with a much more solid build than I was expecting from a regular G&G rifle. When I asked their staff about it, they informed me that it was a Top Tech blowback M4. Boom. First impression: mind blown. It was really nice, as were the rest of the guns in the Top Tech line. So this MP5 being a Top Tech as well comes as no surprise.

Hot Knowledge - Heckler & Koch MP5 Submachine Gun

To begin this week, I thought that in preparation for my upcoming review of the H&K MP5 A5 Electric Blowback Rifle, which is manufactured by Top Tech/G&G, I would do a blog about MP5s in general to provide some basic info on them.

The real steel version are manufactured by Heckler & Koch (H&K) and the Airsoft version, in this case, like I just said, is made by G&G's high-end product line, called Top Tech. While I'll be reviewing one of the lesser known variants of the MP5, there are actually quite a few out there, but for the purposes of Airsoft, there's maybe like five or six variations on the MP5 them. Not all of them made, by Top Tech, of course.

Before I get into the variations, you might be curious to know that the "MP" in "MP5" does NOT, in fact, stand for "Mighty Phine," but rather, "Machine pistol" because it (the real steel version) falls under the submachine gun class thanks to the caliber in which it is chambered (9x19mm pistol rounds). General rule of thumb, though there may be exceptions, is that if it looks like a rifle, but fires handgun caliber ammunition, it's pretty safe to assume that it's a submachine gun. Anyway, that info is sort of just for fun for our purposes, because for the most part, Airsoft guns fire 6mm ammunition.

Another fun factoid for you, playing COD results in a sort of magical event wherein you essentially become an MP5 expert automatically. It's weird, but true.

Comrade Makarov - The New KWA MKV Russian Spetznaz GBB Pistol

Ah yes, the Mak Daddy, or better known as the KWA MKV, a Russian Makarov-inspired Airsoft gas blowback pistol, which is currently in the works. Guess who has it available for pre-order. Yup. Pyramyd Air.

Here is a shot of the KWA MKV below the KWA TT-33, also scheduled for release this year as well. The MKV is a much more compact gun, while the TT-33 is comparable in size to a full-size standard 1911 pistol. Both models will have full-metal alloy slides & frames.

The KWA MKV is pretty basic, although it does have one or two unique features about it, but we'll get to those a bit later in this post.

You can see in the photos both above and below that the KWA MKV has a thumb safety switch, and a slide release. It is, in fact, a semi-automatic gas blowback airsoft pistol so no need to worry about that.

Here is the right side. Simple, yet sexy.

Somewhat unique to smaller pistols, especially one with so little features to it, is the presence of a lanyard loop for attaching a pistol retention lanyard. Nice, considering this is definitely going to be one pistol that you do NOT want to lose while running around on the Airsoft field.

The magazine, sadly, must also be compact in order to fit this compact gun, so capacity will likely be limited to around 11 rounds or so. Since this gun is still a ways from becoming a final production model, that number could change, but like I said, space is limited so you can't rationally expect much in that department.

Another unique feature is the mag release, which is that rounded metal thing just behind the magazine in the image below. I'm not sure how that's going to play out when it comes to performing a quick mag change with this weapon, but really, this probably wasn't designed for engaging in big, long-winded gun fights. Me thinks the real steel version was probably intended for use on missions of a more clandestine nature where one or two shots was all you might need, if you get what I'm sayin'. Eh, comrades?

Lastly, check out the slide way you detach the slide from the frame. Yep, you pull that trigger guard down to release it. Kinda cool. Definitely haven't seen that on any other Airsoft guns I've dealt with yet. Is it a huge deal? No. I just like to try and appreciate the smaller things every once in awhile.

Having personally handled this periodic piece with my own powerful hands (alliteration ftw), I can honestly tell you that if you like KWA gas pistols and you like classic 1911s, then you will most certainly be pleased with this new model. If you don't like KWA guns or classic, WWII style Airsoft 1911s, then this obviously isn't the gun for you.

Echo1 PKM Special report - My Interview with Brian Holt

Brian Holt is a nice guy. Not just because he took the time to bring the Echo1 RedStar PKM Airsoft machine gun over to my house to do an on-camera interview with me, but because he's actually just a nice guy. Thought I'd point that out for those of you that were curious. Anyway, here's the interview he & I did, wherein we discussed the very exciting release of the Echo1 RedStar PKM Airsoft machine gun. It should be out in the summertime, 2012. Since this IS a prototype, bear in mind that the design & features are subject to change without notice or care about what you think. So don't get too attached to it just yet. Easier said than done, I know. But do try.

KWA Magpul LM4 GBB & Electric Recoil Guns - More options!!!

I know that I've reported in the past on the KWA LM4 Gas Blowback Rifle (GBBR) & Electric Recoil Gun (ERG), but since then, KWA has decided to not only douse each model with a bunch of Magpul PTS furniture, but they're also going to be offering the ERG platform in three different lengths:

The SPR length, for the designated marksmen out there.

The Scout, for a versatile, indoor/outdoor option

The CQB, for...well...CQB.

I forgot to ask whether the gas blowback models will also come in these lengths or if it will simply come in the standard 14.5" barrel length. Oh well. Now I have a reason to go back! Haha.

In this video, I talk to Mike Hou about the new KWA gas blowback pistols which include the KWA 1911A1 US Army edition, KWA MKV (Makarov), KWA TT-33 (Tokarev) & even gave another little shout-out to the KWA HK45 because I'm so attracted to it. I also sank to a new low and sniffed a gun on camera. Granted, it WAS the KWA KRISS Vector, but still. I need to lock it up and keep it professional. It's so hard to do though when you've got that Vector in your hands, because you just lose all your inhibitions. I don't know what else I can do.

KWA HK45 Video Review Update

KWA M4 CQR - Affordable Airsoft M4 (with a KRISS Vector cameo)

Here's a super quick review of the upcoming KWA M4 CQR series AEGs, which have the same great quality of the regular KWA AEGs, but feature a polymer lower receiver. This helps to not only cut down on the weight of the gun a bit, but especially helps to cut down on the price of the gun. The KWA KRISS Vector also makes a little appearance because I said so. I, the Tominator, was able to tolerate CrazyNCman Frank's nonsense long enough to do an interview with him during our visit to the SS Airsoft CQB Facility in Sugar Hill, Georgia, a suburb of Hotlanta.
